   La Fontaine l'a dit au singulier, qui était usuel dans l'ancienne langue :
•   Le quadrupède écume, et son oeil étincelle ; Il rugit ; on se cache, on tremble à l'environ, LA FONT. Fabl. II, 9.
   Aux environs de ne se dit que de l'espace, et non du temps ; ainsi ces phrases vulgaires sont inusitées dans le style soigné : J'irai te voir aux environs de Noël ; Il est aux environs de quatre heures.
   XVe s.
•   [Les troupes du duc d'Anjou] se logerent à l'environ, au plus près de la riviere qu'ils purent, FROISS. II, II, 3.
   XVIe s.
•   Ils trouvarent tout le pays à l'environ en paix et silence, RAB. Garg. I, 26.
