gutta-percha
(gu-tta-pèr-ka) s. f.
   Substance différant du caoutchouc, en ce qu'elle n'est ni élastique ni extensible bien que douée d'une grande flexibilité ; elle devient plastique à une température élevée, se façonne, se soude alors comme une pâte grasse, et forme un cuir factice dont l'emploi rend de grands services à l'industrie, LEGOARANT .
La gutta-percha est le produit du suc des laticifères qui se trouvent dans le liber d'un arbre forestier, isonandra gutta, Hooker, appartenant à la famille des sapotées, originaire de Singapore et répandu dans tout l'archipel oriental. On se sert de la gutta-percha pour envelopper les fils télégraphiques sous-marins.
   Malais, getah pertjah, de getah, gomme, et pertjah, nom malais de Sumatra : gomme de Sumatra. Gutta est l'orthographe anglaise de getah, prononcé avec un e muet que représente l'u anglais suivi de deux consonnes ; il a ainsi une fausse ressemblance avec le latin gutta.
