   Titre qu'on donne aux enfants puînés des rois d'Espagne et de Portugal.
   Infant s'est dit aussi dans quelques grandes familles espagnoles.

   Par exagération. Nom donné aux personnes jeunes et belles pour exprimer une grande affection.

   Par dérision. Une infante, une femme d'une vertu équivoque.
   Il m'est expressément ordonné d'arrêter ces infantes, LESAGE .
   Ces deux sens ne sont employés qu'au féminin et dans le style familier.
   XVIe s.
   Le sieur infante de Foix tenoit madame Claude de France sur son bras à l'assemblée tenue pour la promesse de mariage entre cette princesse et le duc de Valois, Lettres de Louis XII, t. I, p. 49, dans LACURNE.
   Espagn. infante, du lat. infantem, enfant (voy. ce mot).
