(né-o-fi-t') s. m. et f.
1°   Nom donné anciennement, dans l'Église, aux nouveaux chrétiens, c'est-à-dire aux païens qui avaient embrassé depuis peu le christianisme, et à ceux qui étaient entrés nouvellement dans les ordres ecclésiastiques.
•   Saint Paul ne voulait pas qu'un néophyte fût tout d'un coup élevé à certaines distinctions, BOURDAL. Serm. 16e dim. après la Pentecôt. Domin. t. IV, p. 29.
•   Il [Nectaire] fut baptisé ; et, comme il était encore revêtu de la robe de néophyte, il fut fait évêque, sans avoir apporté autre disposition à l'épiscopat que celle de ne l'avoir pas brigué, FLÉCH. Hist. de Théod. II, 62.
•   Les néophytes répétaient les airs, comme des oiseaux privés chantent pour attirer dans les rets de l'oiseleur les oiseaux sauvages, CHATEAUB. Génie, IV, IV, 4.
   Il se dit aussi aujourd'hui des personnes nouvellement converties et baptisées.
2°   Adj.
•   Le blâme formel de saint Isidore contre le fanatisme néophyte des rois visigoths [devenus d'ariens catholiques], MONTALEMBERT les Moines d'Occident, t. II, p. 217.
   Termes grecs, l'un est dérivé de nouveau, et l'autre signifie né (voy. physique) : nouvellement né.
