   Anciennement. Juge ecclésiastique délégué par l'évêque pour exercer en son nom la juridiction contentieuse. L'official ne punissait que par les peines canoniques, et devait recourir au juge royal pour les peines afflictives. Il y avait trois sortes d'officiaux, l'ordinaire, le métropolitain et le primatial.
   Mais, depuis trois moissons, à leur saint assemblage L'official a joint le nom de mariage, BOILEAU Lutr. I.

   XVIe s.
   De là sont venus les officiaux, qui ont esté faits pour tenir la jurisdiction ecclesiastique, CALV. Instit. 977.
