(pal-la-di-om' ; on a prononcé aussi pal-la-di-on) s. m.
1°   Statue de Pallas, qui passait pour le gage de la conservation de Troie.
•   Le palladium, quoique tombé du ciel, n'était qu'un gage sacré de la protection de Pallas ; c'était elle qu'on vénérait dans le palladium ; c'était notre sainte ampoule, VOLT. Dict. phil. Idolâtrie, I.
   Par extension, nom donné à divers objets auxquels certaines villes, certains empires attachaient leur durée. Le boucher sacré, tombé du ciel durant le règne de Numa, était le palladium de Rome et de son empire.
2°   Fig. Garantie, sauvegarde.
•   La loi civile est le palladium de la propriété, MONTESQ. Espr. XXVI, 15.
•   C'est là qu'est le vrai palladium de la liberté, J. J. ROUSS. Pologne, 7.

   Devant ce mot qui n'existait pas en français, l'ancien trouvère du XIIe siècle a hésité. Une première fois il lui a laissé la forme latine, palladion ; une seconde fois, plus hardi, il a soumis le mot à la règle de l'accentuation, et il a mis pallade.

Terme de chimie. Métal blanc, très difficile à fondre, très malléable, découvert par Wollaston dans la mine de platine, et dénommé d'après la déesse Pallas.
