(pa-tan, tan-t') adj.
   Évident, manifeste. Un fait patent.
   Autrefois, acquit patent, brevet du roi scellé du grand sceau, portant gratification d'une somme d'argent et servant d'acquit et de décharge à celui à qui il s'adressait.
   Ancien terme de chancellerie. Lettres patentes, voy. lettre, n° 16.
   Lettres patentes, se dit encore aujourd'hui de certains actes de l'autorité souveraine.
   XIVe s.
   Aucunes choses qui ne sont pas trop patentes, ORESME Eth. 136.
   XVe s.
