sumac
(su-mak) s. m.
   Genre de la famille des térébinthacées ; on y distingue : le sumac des corroyeurs, rhus coriaria, L. arbrisseau de l'Europe méridionale ; le sumac vénéneux, rhus toxicodendrum, L. arbrisseau de l'Amérique ; et le sumac au vernis, dont le suc, également vénéneux, sert, chez les Japonais, à vernir les ustensiles de bois.
   Nom donné par les teinturiers aux feuilles, fleurs, baies et graines de sumac, récoltées, séchées et réduites en poudre plus ou moins grossière. Sumac ou sommac et herbe de maroquin, le 100 pesant payera 10 sols, Tarif, 18 sept. 1664.
   On a dit aussi sommail. Vieil sommail qui a servi à passer les maroquins, Règl. sur les manuf. août 1669, teinturiers en laine, art. 6.
   XVIe s.
   Eau de forge, en laquelle on auroit fait bouillir sumach et roses rouges, PARÉ VIII, 25.
   Esp. zumaque ; portug. summagre ; de l'arabe sommak.
