(té-o-do-li-t') s. m.
Instrument d'astronomie et de géodésie, qui sert à mesurer directement les angles réduits à l'horizon, et les distances zénithales.
   Théodolite autographe, ou planchette photographique, instrument à l'aide duquel on applique la photographie à la levée des plans.
   Origine inconnue ; car les étymologies données (du grec, voir, et, voie, ou, long) ne sont pas acceptables.

   THÉODOLITE. - ÉTYM. Ajoutez : Ce mot se trouve pour la première fois en 1704, dans Harris, Lexicon technologicum, Londres, 2 vol. in-f°, et là il désigne non pas l'instrument astronomique d'aujourd'hui, mais un simple instrument d'arpenteur, qui n'était point muni de lunettes ; de sorte que l'étymologie, s'appliquant non à l'instrument primitif, mais à l'instrument perfectionné, est une pure invention. Théodolite, au sens d'instrument astronomique et avec l'étymologie se trouve dans Lalande, Astronomie, t. II, p. 703, 3 vol. in-4°, Paris, 1792 ; Lalande cite un beau théodolite de trois pieds de diamètre, exécuté par Ramsden.
